This day is also known as Pentecost, which means 50 and refers to the 50 days after Passover. In Acts 2, the day that the Believers were gathered together was a specific day, Shavuot. The Counting of the Omer ties Passover – and Yeshua’s (Jesus’) death, burial, and resurrection – to the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai and the Holy Spirit on Pentecost, although, on today’s calendar, the dates vary year by year. ) The Counting of the Omer also reminds us of the significance of receiving the Law at Mount Sinai, which occurred 50 days after our Passover deliverance from Egypt. (An omer is the same amount of manna they were to gather each day. Through the counting, the Israelites were to remember God's faithfulness and provision toward them, which included leading them out of Egypt and providing them with manna in the wilderness. This period was the time between the barley harvest and the wheat harvest. (See Leviticus 23:15–16 and Deuteronomy 16:9–12.) An omer is a measurement of grain, referring to the wave offering the priest made on the day after Passover. The Lord commanded the Jewish people to “count the omer,” or count day by day, for 49 days (seven weeks) from Passover toward Shavuot.
